Beer Battered Cod
Crispy beer battered cod is easy to make and great for the whole family! It’s a crunchy yet light batter that’s incredibly simple to make.
What will I need for this recipe?
Cod Fillets – Cod is a versatile white fish that can be baked, broiled, roasted, or fried. You can also use flounder or halibut if you don’t have cod on hand.
All-Purpose Flour – Fish fillets that have a layer of flour on them allow the dredge to adhere before frying.
Corn or Potato Starch – Using cornstarch on the fillet cuts the protein which makes the crust crispier in the fryer.
Seasonings – For this recipe I use paprika, garlic powder, onion powder, creole seasoning, cayenne pepper, black pepper, and salt. It’s a simple blend of seasonings, but it adds a lot of flavor!
Bottle of Beer – I prefer to use a lighter beer like Sapporo which is a Japanese Lager that is light, crisp, and full of flavor. Perfect for this light batter! If you prefer not to use beer you can also use soda water.
How to make Beer Battered Cod
Make you batter
Start by preheating your fryer to 350 degrees F. Combine the all-purpose flour, cornstarch, paprika, garlic powder, onion powder, creole seasoning, cayenne pepper, black pepper, and salt in a bowl using a whisk or fork. Open your bottle or can of beer and whisk in slowly. Be sure to whisk out all of the lumps that may form. Once well combined, let the batter sit for 10-15 minutes.
Prepare the fish fillets
Rinse and pat dry your fish. Season with light salt and pepper. Coat fish in flour so that the batter will adhere to it more easily. Once coated in flour, shake off excess and dip into your batter mixture. Be sure all of the fish is completely covered. Drop into your oil and fry for 6-8 minutes or until golden brown.
Remove fish and place on a wire rack or paper towel to allow potential excess grease to drip off.
Plate them up!
Place between a brioche bun with some lettuce tomato and cheddar cheese. Serve and Enjoy!
